The pre-rental vehicle inspection checklist

Run the same check before every rental. It takes three or four minutes with the renter standing next to you, and it is the record that protects the showroom if the car comes back damaged.

Exterior

• Walk the full body: bonnet, roof, boot lid, both bumpers, all four doors, both front wings, both rear quarters.
• Mark every existing scratch, dent, crack or repaint on a car diagram.
• Windscreen and windows: chips or cracks.
• Lights and indicators front and rear: all working, none cracked.
• Mirrors: intact, both fold and adjust.
• Wheels: kerb damage on the alloys, and hub caps present.

Tyres

• Tread on all four, and visible condition of the spare.
• Pressure looks correct; no bulges or cuts on the sidewalls.
• Jack, wheel brace and wheel-lock key present.

Interior

• Seats and mats: existing tears, burns or heavy stains.
• Dashboard warning lights: none on after start-up.
• Air conditioning blows cold.
• Infotainment, wipers, horn, all windows: working.
• Odometer reading, written down.

Documents and fuel

• Registration book or a copy, and a valid token, in the car.
• Fuel level, noted. Agree the return level (return-as-received is simplest).
• Renter's CNIC and licence seen and recorded.

Close the check
